食積 (Food stagnation)

食積(Food Stagnation) English below

  • Bagel(貝果)

Food Stagnation

Food Stagnation is an important concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It refers to food that is not properly digested or transformed, causing it to remain in the digestive system and gradually impair the function of the Spleen and Stomach.

In TCM, Food Stagnation is not considered a disease itself, but rather an important underlying factor that may contribute to many different health conditions. If left unaddressed, it may gradually affect not only the digestive system, but also the skin, sleep quality, and many other aspects of health. Early recognition and treatment are therefore important.

What Problems Can Food Stagnation Cause?

When Food Stagnation persists over time, it may contribute to problems affecting multiple body systems.

Digestive System

  • Poor appetite

  • Bloating

  • Indigestion

  • Stomach pain

  • Acid reflux

  • Diarrhea

  • Abdominal pain

  • Constipation

  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth

Skin

  • Eczema

  • Hives (Urticaria)

  • Acne

  • Recurrent allergic skin conditions

Sleep & Nervous System

  • Poor sleep quality

  • Frequent waking during the night

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

Other Possible Symptoms

  • Chronic cough

  • Oral health concerns

  • Chronic inflammatory conditions

Please note: Not every patient experiences all of these symptoms. Even one of the above may warrant an evaluation for Food Stagnation or an imbalance of the Spleen and Stomach.

How Does TCM Detect Food Stagnation?

In addition to evaluating symptoms, TCM practitioners use observation, listening, questioning, and pulse diagnosis to identify Food Stagnation and digestive imbalances—sometimes even before obvious symptoms develop.

Treatment is individualized and may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary recommendations to restore healthy digestive function.

What Causes Food Stagnation?

Food Stagnation usually develops gradually rather than overnight.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Weak Spleen and Stomach function

  • Eating foods that are difficult to digest

  • Eating too quickly

  • Inadequate chewing

  • Overeating

  • Frequent consumption of cold foods and iced beverages

One of the most common causes of Food Stagnation today is simply eating too quickly and not chewing food thoroughly.

Foods That May Be More Likely to Contribute to Food Stagnation

If you have weak digestion or frequently experience digestive discomfort, you may benefit from limiting the following foods:

Meat

  • Pork chops

  • Steak

  • Lamb

  • Lamb spine (Yang Xie Zi)

  • Pork intestines

  • Sausage

  • Chicken gizzards

  • Chicken feet

  • Chicken wings

  • Beef jerky

  • Pork jerky

  • Meat floss

Seafood

  • Sea snails

  • King crab

  • Sea urchin

Processed Foods

  • Bagels

  • Vietnamese sandwiches (Bánh mì)

  • Cheese

  • Tapioca pearls (bubble tea pearls)

  • Plant-based meat substitutes

  • Processed vegetarian meat products

Other Foods

  • Corn

  • Glutinous rice products

  • Firm tofu

  • Kelp knots

  • Burdock root

  • Lotus root (although commonly used in TCM to help clear Stomach Heat, it should be chewed thoroughly)

(This list will continue to be updated based on ongoing clinical observations.)

The Earlier Food Stagnation Is Addressed, the Better

In general, Food Stagnation is easier to treat in its early stages.

If left untreated for a prolonged period, it may become more difficult to resolve and may contribute to the development of digestive tract growths, such as polyps. Early intervention is therefore recommended.

How Can Food Stagnation Be Prevented?

Healthy eating habits are one of the best ways to prevent Food Stagnation.

We recommend:

  • Eat regular meals at consistent times.

  • Avoid overeating.

  • Chew food thoroughly and eat slowly.

  • Maintain a balanced diet and avoid excessive food preferences.

  • After recovering from a serious illness, avoid excessive nutritional supplementation. Instead, gradually rebuild your health according to your individual constitution.

  • Choose natural, minimally processed, and easily digestible foods whenever possible.

How Does TCM Treat Food Stagnation?

Treating Food Stagnation involves much more than simply improving digestion.

The goal of TCM is to restore the function of the Spleen and Stomach, support Kidney function when appropriate, and help the body regain its natural balance.

When Food Stagnation results from overeating, the body may naturally attempt to eliminate the excess food through vomiting or diarrhea. For example, after a large meal or banquet, some people may experience digestive discomfort, vomiting, or diarrhea, followed by sweating and a noticeable improvement in symptoms. This does not necessarily mean the food was spoiled—it may simply indicate that the amount consumed exceeded the digestive system's capacity.

Once the accumulated food is eliminated and the body's normal digestive movement is restored, symptoms often improve.

Treatment is always tailored to each patient's constitution, the severity of Food Stagnation, and how long it has been present.

Different Types of Food Stagnation

TCM recognizes that Food Stagnation is not always the same.

Because different foods have different energetic properties, the type of Food Stagnation they produce may also differ. Therefore, treatment is based on each individual's body constitution and TCM pattern diagnosis.

For example:

  • Excessive meat consumption is more likely to produce a Heat-type Food Stagnation.

  • Excessive fruit or cold/raw foods are more likely to produce a Cold-type Food Stagnation.

For this reason, dietary recommendations and treatment plans vary from person to person.

Our Treatment Philosophy

Many chronic health conditions do not develop overnight, and restoring health also takes time.

Rather than focusing only on relieving symptoms, TCM seeks to identify and address the underlying causes of imbalance. By improving digestive function, strengthening the Spleen and Stomach, and restoring the body's natural balance, we aim to help patients achieve long-term health instead of temporary symptom relief.

Improving your body constitution requires patience and consistency. With the right treatment plan, healthy lifestyle habits, and time, the body often has an amazing ability to heal and restore balance.
